After a period of construction spanning several months, the attraction soft opened to the public on June 9, 2012. Ĭonstruction for the Despicable Me attraction at Universal Studios Florida began in mid-August 2011, with the removal the former Jimmy Neutron ride. Universal Parks & Resorts also announced a major refurbishment of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Islands of Adventure on the same day. On May 19, 2011, the attraction was officially announced at a live webcast at Universal Orlando Resort. On April 14, 2011, Universal Orlando Resort began a teaser campaign on their Facebook page where weekly hints were released leading up to the announcement of their upcoming attraction. The ride began seasonal operations on April 1, 2011, before officially closing on August 18, 2011. In March 2011, Universal Studios Florida announced that Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast would be closing to make way for a new attraction due to Nick no longer airing the show mentioned on the ride even though its spin-off Planet Sheen premiered at that time, SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly Oddparents are still on the air and most of the Nicktoons represented on the former ride such as Rugrats and Hey Arnold! have moved to TeenNick where they have currently been on their own block. Some theming surrounding the ride at Universal Studios Florida ![]() The attraction replaced Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast in Florida and Terminator 2 3D in Hollywood. The attraction is based on Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment's 2010 animated film Despicable Me and employs the use of 3-D HD digital animation. The coolest part however is probably the little carnival stand which is accurately recreated from the first movie, allowing kids to try to win Agnes' fluffy pink unicorn for themselves and be part of the Despicable Me world. The Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem show building at Universal Studios Florida The Super Silly Fun Land has a bunch of small kiddie rides, and an area which leave many kids soaked. Heck, even the Marvel movies theme the Real D glasses for theatrical screenings, its not too much to ask, right? The themeing of the outside and inside of Gru's house is fantastic, filled with fun details which will be photographed by millions of tourists each year. There are also some missed themeing opportunities, like the 3D glasses are stock/standard Dolby 3D glasses - you would think an attraction that promises to turn you into a minion would have had 3D glasses themed off of the Minion's trademarked goggles. I wish the park had more room for old school ride experiences that move further than a hydraulic gimbal beneath a set of seats will allow. That said, it is still yet another Universal theme park simulator ride where visitors sit in a moving vehicle wearing 3D glasses and staring at a giant screen. Minion Meyhem is a lot of fun, and I'm sure kids will love it. ![]()
